A match-winning innings from Matthew Christensen helped NMMU Madibaz record their first win of the Varsity Cricket tournament.
Christensen’s knock of 50 and an all-round display from Edward Moore were too much for the Ikeys to handle.
Ikeys lost talented batsman Jack Newby the second over of their innings, but soon found their rhythm with Taariq Chiecktey coming in and finding the boundary on a number of occasions as they went to 29/1 after five overs.
Chiecktey was soon dismissed and in the next five overs Ikeys continued to score runs steadily albeit losing another wicket in the process and after the tenth over they were 72/3.
Lloyd Brown then got the vital wicket of captain Sebastian Golding and the rest of the Ikeys batting line-up disintergrated soon after with Madibaz’ Moore claiming three scalps in five overs with Ikeys were struggling on 106/8.
Ikeys were to lose another wicket, but 30 runs of 19 balls from Luke Stevens helped them get a score of 137/9 at the end of their innings.
Madibaz got an early advantage as they started their innings on five runs as a result of Ikeys losing a wicket in their powerplay plus over.
Their opening batsmen were solid at the start with both Moore and David White going at just over a run a ball for the first three overs before White was bowled by Jame Strang. After the first six overs they were sitting comfortably on 41/1.
Ikeys’ bowling never really troubled the Madibaz with Moore, after impressing with the ball, scoring a valuable 28 before he was dismissed by Stevens in the tenth over. Despite his loss Madibaz were still sitting well, needing 64 off the last ten overs.
Although they lost a further two wickets, a match-winning knock from Christensen, scoring 50 off 51 balls meant the Madibaz were comfortable six wicket winners in the end
