Hosts NWU Pukke crushed UFS Kovsies by 55 runs to maintain their unbeaten run in Varsity Cricket.
It was an all-round display from the men from Potch who impressed with both bat and ball, keeping Kovsies winless in the process.
Pukke batsman Wihan Lubbe got his team off to an ideal start scoring 39 of their 49 runs in the first five overs despite losing Kagiso Rapulana for just two in the second over.
Lubbe was gone for in the first ball of the sixth over however, with Keagan Rafferty claiming the vital wicket. Pukke’s run rate slowed in the next five overs and after the tenth they were 76/3 after losing Wimpie Viljoen for 15 in the eighth.
Marques Akkerman then stepped up and together with Rohan Kruger piled on the runs increasing the run rate once again to over eight an over and were 106/3 after 13 overs.
It was then deja vu as just like Lubbe, Ackerman was dismissed in the first ball of next over and two balls later new batsman Dewald Joubert was the next go with Dirk Bruwer claiming his second wicket.
Despite the fall of wickets Pukke continued to score regularly with Kruger scoring 50 before he was bowled by Van Dyk. Pukke lost another three wickets, but a 23 from 16 balls from Henning du Plooy meant they posted a competitive 182/9.
In reply, Kovsies got off to a slow start going at a run a ball in the first three overs. They then lost captain Mathys Bruwer for only two in the next over and after five overs they were 29/2 with Andries Gous losing his wicket to Armandt Erasmus.
Kovsies’ problems were confounded when they lost another three wickets in quick succession with bowling from Erasmus, Lubbe and Kobus Coertse causing the top order all sorts of problems.
After ten overs Kovsies were 63/5 and they never recovered despite a valiant effort from Corne Dry and Leus du Plooy who increased the total to a 110 in the 13th over before Du Plooy was caught behind from the bowling of Bjorn Fortuin. Pukke got the rest of the batsmen with ease and Kovsies were all out for 127 runs, winning by 55 runs.
