UCT Ikeys registered an impressive win over UFS Kovsies in their opening game of Varsity Cricket thanks to their talented batsman Jack Newby.
Newby scored 59 off 54 balls on a day when Ikeys never looked in trouble. Their bowlers got it all started with an industrious display preventing the Kovsie batsmen to find their rhythm
They struggled to gain any momentum in the first five overs losing wickets at regular intervals. Dirk Brewer was first to go in the second over from the bowling of James Strang. After five overs Kovsies were 30/2 after Andries Gous was bowled by Jordan Leppan.
After the loss of their third wicket in the seventh over, Kovsies finally started to gain some momentum with the bat with Michael Erlank and Ian Finlay forming a good partnership to take them up to 97 before Erlank was dismissed for 29 in the 14th over.
Two more wickets by Ikeys captain Sebastian Golding meant that Kovsies again lost momentum with both Finlay and Leus Du Plooy being bowled by the skipper. Kovsies eventually posted a total of 151/6 for their 20 overs.
Ikeys, in their chase, went into to a blistering start with star batsman Jack Newby making light work of the Kovsies bowlers scoring all of his teams runs in the first two overs. After seven overs they were 42/2 after losing Golding and Taariq Chiecktey.
Despite the wickets Ikeys continued to make ground on Kovsies total with Newby regularly keeping the tally ticking over in favour from the men from Cape Town.
Keegan Rafferty finally got Newby out in the 15th over but the damage was already done as the batman’s 59 runs put Ikeys in a winning position as they only need 22 runs off the last 24 balls with seven wickets to spare.
Brandon Tattum and Richard Tissiman eventually got Ikeys home and dry with some attacking batting towards the end, posting 155/3. Ikeys won by seven wickets
