What has been described as the “best thing to happen to South African netball in a very long time” by Elize Kotze, coach of the South African netball team, is finally upon us.
The University of Johannesburg kick-starts the Varsity Netball tournament with a home game against VUT, on September 14.
UJ events manager, Niamh Faherty said: “We’re excited to host this sporting code for the first time at UJ, it’s going to be an hour of jam packed action in Soweto on Sunday.”
Deancke Rohde will be leading the UJ team in the competition this year.
“We are amped about starting the tournament on home soil,” said a very enthusiastic Rohde. “Great excitement and spirit is running high in the team,” she added.
UJ has their eye on the prize and aim to be consistent both on and off the court and to give their utmost best every time that they set foot onto the court.
Rohde who stands at 1.93m and plays GS (goal shooter), averaged 83% (20 goals from 24) in one of the game’s from last year’s tournament, aims to significantly improve this goal average.
“I am also looking forward to seeing the new talent that will brought to the table from all the other seven universities,” she said.
