With a 2-2 draw in their Soweto semifinal against UJ on Monday, the Kovsies team pack their bags to return home.
The Bloemfontein side crashed out of Varsity Football on penalties after putting in a gutsy performance against the unbeaten UJ.
Upon arrival at UJ, Kovsies not only had their game faces on, but their desire to qualify for the next match.
Coach Godfrey Tenoff says the team had a real desire to win the match and they were prepared for a difficult match.
“We showed our intentions to attack and win. I think we were prepared even though we started slow. We got back into the match because of guts and determination and played well in the second half,” Tenoff said.
Tenoff explained that in the first half they were able to get enough pressure on the back four of UJ.
“We defended too deep, so even when we won possession we were too deep to counter attack or keep meaningful possession.
“We had eight minutes, so we had numerical advantage but we could have been more clinical. We didn’t lose the match which is no consolation because we lost with penalty kicks. I believe that the 2-2 score line was fair,” said Tenoff about the final result.
With regards to what will be following for the team, Tenoff says that they will not be rebuilding but solidifying and improve with more players.
“We will search for players who are as keen for football success as these players were and more,” he said.
Tenoff added a final appreciative thanks to all of his players and staff and said that he is proud to be associated with them,
“To our fans, you were phenomenal in this tournament. You were our 12th man and our pride. I would like to thank the UFS, all participating institutions, the sponsors and Varsity Football for making this event possible. To Tuks and UJ, may the best team win,” he said.
