UCT goalkeeper Bevan Adonis said their 2-0 defeat to Kovsies on the Green Mile was a bitter pill to swallow.
Having lost two consecutive away games 6-0, the Ikey Warriors were keen to make amends in front of their home fans and lift themselves off the bottom of the standings, but it was not to be as the visitors took all three points in the end.
The loss was another disappointment for the Cape side, as they had hoped that the game would result in their first win of the tournament. The team fought hard to get back into it after an own goal early in the second half, but their efforts were in vain.
Adonis, who made some tricky, and vital saves throughout the match, said that their finishing had let them down.
“We were very disappointed; we worked hard in the lead-up to the tournament and last night we played well, but just couldn’t convert our chances,” he said.
He admitted that their disappointing form this season has been tough to take.
“It’s a bitter pill to swallow – our lack of success in this tournament.”
Although they lost, Adonis felt that the performance was an improvement on the previous week which had seen them go down 6-0 to log-leaders UJ in Soweto.
“We were just outclassed by UJ last week; we couldn’t compete against them. But last night we played against a team of a similar level of ability, and there are games you need to win if you want to compete in a tournament like this, and last night was one of them,” he said.
However, the battling Cape side are happy to take any positives they can from the game as they look ahead to the local derby with UWC next week.
“We played well – everybody did what they needed to do. It was a good performance taking into account the last two weeks’ results. The outcome just didn’t go our way,” he explained.
UCT will have their last chance to get their only win under their belt when they come up against UWC next week. Given that UWC have only won two of their games, the Cape derby looks to be relatively evenly matched.
