NWU’s FNB Man of the match Orebotse Mongae said the passionate Mafikeng crowd was instrumental in their tough 3-2 victory over Limpopo on Monday.
The hosts were forced to come from behind twice in a hard-fought battle, but produced the goods in the end, and Orebotse said that the packed crowd had played a major role.
“The game was a tough and physical one but at the end we had to win for the crowd that came in numbers to support us,” he said.
After their last loss against Kovsies last week, Limpopo was under pressure to score goals and get that elusive three points.
With both camps pulling out all stops to win the game, UL`s Kgatla Clyde scored the opening goal of the match after a free kick was awarded 30 minutes into the game.
This goal was a wake-up call for NWU players who managed to salvage an equaliser by Mongae during referee optional time at the end of the first half.
Right from the beginning of second half both teams went for the kill resulting in Limpopo Mogale Mahlatsi scoring the leading goal for his team making the score 2-1.
This put NWU under pressure resulting in the NWU skipper Lebogang Phetlhu levelling the score again from a corner kick.
NWU super substitute Machwisa Tshenolo scored the final goal, impressing the home crowd which was chanting victory songs.
Victorious coach Amos Xabanisa said: “I am happy for the boys; they outworked themselves after a hard fought battle. We knew that UL was a tough team, we didn’t underestimate them.”
