NWU-Mafikeng Captain Lebogang Phetlhu wants to lead by example as his side prepares for their first home game of the Varsity Sports Football tournament against UWC at NWU Sports Ground on Monday 28 July.
“We are looking forward for our first home game after a hard fought away draw against a determined NMMU last Monday. We need to win this one for our loyal fans,” he said.
Lebogang, who plays centre back, hails from a village called Magoegoe in Mafikeng and is in the final year of studying Logistics Management. He started his football career at Sol Plaatjie Secondary School before joining NWU Mafikeng Campus in 2012.
The 21 year old has played for the University Sports of South Africa’s (USSA) national under 21 squad during the 2012 academic year and was part of the 2011 Sol Plaatjie SS team that reached both the Coca-Cola National Competition and Kay Motsepe Cup finals respectively.
Phetlhu hopes to realise his dream of playing in the Premier Soccer League in the not too distant future.
The defender was grateful for being handed the captaincy and hopes to take his team to the final of the competition.
“I want to thank the coach for the confidence he has shown on me. I am excited to lead a team with such potential. I believe the sky won`t limit us to reach the final of this competition,” he said.
