UCT secured an impressive 4-2 bonus-point victory against Wits in the final Varsity Hockey clash on Monday.
The Cape side took control from the start to stun their hosts as a sweeping move up the left saw Mike Dally turn the ball into the net for the opening goal in the first minute.
They won a penalty corner directly afterwards, and although Wits goalkeeper Carl Zondagh made the save there was no denying his team were under serious pressure.
Wits eventually created an opportunity on the counter attack, but they could not convert as UCT held out on defence and doubled their lead from a penalty corner when the ball deflected past the goalkeeper.
They made it 3-0 late in the first chukka as captain Seb Golding showed some great skills in the circle to score from a variation off a penalty corner.
However, Wits had the last say before the first break as a scrambled goal from Jarryd Povall gave them some hope of working their way back into the game.
Wits had their powerplay at the start of the second chukka, and they took the game to the visitors, with UCT goalkeeper Matt Becker kept very busy.
The Ikeys managed to hold out and they wrapped up the bonus point with three minutes left in the chukka as a penalty corner slammed into the back of the goal.
UCT had their powerplay at the start of the final chukka and dominated proceedings but could make their numerical advantage count on the scoreboard as Wits held out.
The game opened up as Wits looked to fight their way back in the final stages and they were rewarded with a goal from Devin Campbell after some sloppy defending from UCT.
The home side had the crowd right behind them as they looked to stage an unlikely comeback, but they could not find another goal as UCT held on for victory.
