All four of the matches in the Varsity Hockey tournament at Wits on Sunday ended in draws.
It was competitive throughout as the teams ended deadlocked in every game on the second day of action which shows just how closely-fought the competition will be.
In the first match of the day UCT were frustrated by a gutsy Rhodes outfit that showed a lot of heart to earn a 1-1 draw.
Rhodes were first to score after a goalless opening chukka, and UCT soon equalised but could not find a way through the Grahamstown team’s defence which was bombarded in the closing stages.
In the second match of the day hometown favourites Wits snatched a 1-1 draw with a goal in the last 20 seconds of the match.
NMMU opened the scoring at the end of the first chukka when a penalty corner was converted, but they would have their hearts broken at the death as Wits rallied back.
There was another big fight back in the next match as well as UJ came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Kovsies.
The Bloemfontein side started well and took the game to UJ, scoring their two goals inside the first 17 minutes, but UJ refused to give in and were rewarded with a draw after staging a comeback.
In the final match on Sunday Maties and UP-Tuks ended deadlocked at 2-2 after an intense battle which saw both teams play some impressive hockey.
All four of the goals came in the final chukka after a tense start to the match with the defences ruling the roost.
UP-Tuks were first to score, but Maties responded immediately and both teams scored in a dramatic last five minutes, with the draw perhaps a fair reflection of the game.
