The University of the Free State Kovsies (UFS) will want to tune in mentally for their upcoming game against the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in round three of Varsity Football.
UFS suffered their first defeat of the campaign last week after a 2-0 loss at the hands of the ever-dangerous NWU in Mafikeng.
The defeat was a blow to their teams’ confidence, especially after their stellar 3-0 win over record champions UP-Tuks a week prior in Bloemfontein.
This loss led to a certain level of self-doubt, but hosting VUT at home on Thursday will be an ideal opportunity to return to winning ways and set the record straight.
VUT will certainly not make it easy for the Blues, but returning to their normal style of play will go a long way in changing their fortunes.
UFS forward, Duncan Mohale, who scored a cracking goal from a set piece against Tuks in round one, admitted that the ego was a bit bruised following their trip to Mafikeng, but it’s the nature of the game and cutting out mistakes will be important.
“The trip to North West wasn’t a pleasant one, as we didn’t get the result that we had hoped for,” Mohale told Varsity Football.
“That’s football for you, you lose today and then you get to play again tomorrow. We made two mistakes in the game against NWU and we got punished for that.”
Mohale added that returning to winning ways against VUT is high on the agenda in training and they are out to prove that they weren’t lucky in their opening game of the tournament.
“The morale in the camp was a bit low after the game and everyone was starting to feel like we aren’t a good team,” he added. “All we are focusing on now and what the coaches are trying to implement is to get back to winning ways.
“We want to prove to everyone that what we did to UP-Tuks wasn’t a fluke. We’ve got VUT this week, so we just want to make sure that we keep the ball and play our normal brand of football.
“Playing at home in front of our fans will be a bonus.”
UFS are currently fourth on the log by three points and trails the third-placed VUT by one. The Mavuti started their campaign with a 3-1 win over UKZN, while in round two they played to a goalless draw against TUT in Tshwane last week.
Thursday afternoon’s third-round clash between UFS and VUT at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein kicks off at 17:00.
