A group of top Varsity Sports executives have been on a research trip to America this week, learning more about how College sports are run in the USA.
The tour saw the group visit New York, Washington DC, Winston and Atlanta in an effort to gain as much knowledge about what makes university sports in America so successful.
The group, which included CEO of ASEM Varsity Sports & Varsity Cup Duitser Bosman, ASEM Corporate Account Executive James Muncer, Chief Financial Officer Taryn Monaghan, Chief Executive Officer of the University Sport Company Flip van Zyl, CEO ASEM & ASEM Varsity Sports
Francois Pienaar, Sport and Recreation Administrator, University of Limpopo and ASEM Varsity Sports Exco Member Kakata Maponyane and CEO, Sports 4 U Gary Vorster, attended several meetings and sporting events.
The trip started on Sunday, July 27 when the group attended a New York Yankees v Toronto Blue Jays baseball game at the Yankees stadium in the Bronx.
On the 28th it was off to Georgetown University in Washington DC to learn more about the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)and how it is run in terms of Media, Merchandising, Marketing, Branding, Finance and sponsorship models.
On Tuesday the 29th it was back to New York for a trip to Madison Square Gardens and the 9/11 memorial as well as a few well-known restaurants.
From there they travelled to Winston Salem for a visit to IMG which is the USA’s largest collegiate sports marketing company, representing more than 200 of the nation’s top collegiate properties to learn more about their Finance, Sales, Marketing and Media operations.
On Thursday, July 31 they visited the Atlantic Coast Conference and on Friday, August 1 it was off to IMG in Atlanta where they tackled Licencing, Systems, and legal issues.
